The Road Ahead for iConsole
Today, we announced that iConsole is being rebuilt atop MeeGo. Our goal is to have a new release available by the end of the year. We know that’s a ways off, but as MeeGo is entering the home theater, we hope to stand iConsole right alongside MeeGo.
To this end, we’ve rebuilt the web site, and we’ve presented our vision at MeeGo Conference San Francisco this evening.
Below are the slides we showed off, touting our vision. In coming posts, we’ll talk more in-depth about where things stand, and how we plan to implement these features. We’ll be working some of the feature focuses into upcoming posts. So, if one feature or another isn’t clearly defined, don’t worry, we’ll explain each in-depth in the coming weeks.

We’ve redefined iConsole to target two key devices; the flash drive and the set-top box (STB). We did this because we need to build the platform on something that is both discreet and attractive to geeks. The flash drive serves this quite well, actually.
WIth the flash drive, you’ll be able to take your whole home theater with you. Not just your music, photos, and video, but your games, apps, content… and everything necessary to play and interact with all of the above. The flash drive can boot a netbook plugged into your HDTV, as well as your quad-core gaming rig. Even better, by getting your primary OS out of the way, the flash drive can help software take full advantage of the resources available in your system. That means games and apps will play and run better, with longer battery life.
It also means we’re opening the door to cross-platform compatibility. The flash drive can boot Mac, it can boot PC, and it can share content with a STB. One build target, no more need to port games back to Mac and PC.
Of course, we know the average joe understands the notion of a STB. It’s simple, and it helps developers target (and get the most out of) one set of system requirements. Our long-term focus is going to be on the STB. But, by focusing on the STB, we can extend those features back to Mac and PC through the flash drive.
When we first introduced iConsole, we touted the notion of having an open, cross-platform, cloud console. We certainly hit some speed bumps along the way to that goal. Our new targets will help make iConsole a reality for each of these goals. And, we’re really happy to be working atop the robust MeeGo platform.
Finally, many thanks to Intel, the Linux Foundation, and all the sponsors of MeeGo SF.
